Top Running Races in South Africa (2025)
As South Africans, we are a running-mad nation. So, it’s no surprise that we host some incredible races across the country. When I was tasked with the topic of “Top Running Races,” I quickly realized it’s nearly impossible to include every event that deserves a spot on the list. Let’s face it, what makes a race “top” is subjective—it depends on what you, as a runner, value in an event.
Is it the history of the race, the challenging course, breathtaking scenery, or the electric crowd support? Maybe it’s all of the above. Whether you prefer a big-city race with thousands of runners or a remote, quirky event in the middle of the wilderness, South Africa has something for everyone.
With that in mind, I’ve narrowed it down to a list of influential races that define our running calendar and attract international attention followed by a ‘shortlist’ of races to consider based on your preferences.
Here’s my take on South Africa’s top races for 2025:
Total Sports Two Oceans Marathon
"The World's Most Beautiful Marathon"
No introduction is needed here. The Two Oceans Marathon is a bucket-list race for runners around the world. With its stunning Cape Peninsula route, this event offers both a 21km Half Marathon and a 56km Ultra Marathon, making it accessible to runners of various levels.
Over a single year, nearly 30,000 participants take to the streets in a celebration of running. But don’t be fooled by the postcard-worthy views—the course is infamous for its challenging hills, so bring your climbing legs! Whether you’re a local or flying in from abroad, this race is a must-do.
George Mountain Ultra (MUT) by UTMB
"Trail Running at Its Finest"
Trail runners, this one’s for you! The George MUT offers an unforgettable experience in the Outeniqua Mountain Range. With distances ranging from an 11km "Lite" to the epic 100-mile MUT Miler (boasting over 8,000m of elevation), there’s something for everyone.
This event isn’t just a race—it’s a community. Organisers, volunteers, and runners come together to create a magical atmosphere. Plus, MUT is one of the few UTMB qualifiers in Africa, making it a top choice for those eyeing a spot in the world’s biggest trail events.
Comrades Marathon
"The Ultimate Human Race"
No South African running ‘list’ is complete without the Comrades Marathon. As the oldest and biggest Ultra Marathon in the world, this 90km race between Durban and Pietermaritzburg is more than just an event—it’s a national treasure.
The history is unparalleled, with over a century of races (the first dating back to 1921). But what makes Comrades truly special is the camaraderie. Runners from all walks of life come together to tackle this ultimate challenge. It’s a test of determination, mental strength, and endurance—and an experience that stays with you forever. If you are yet to do one , I am jealous of you - you only get to be a novice once!
Cape Town Marathon
"Africa's Premier Marathon"
Every October, the Mother City transforms into a festival of running. The Cape Town Marathon, which is on the verge of becoming an Abbott World Marathon Major, is the ultimate experience for road runners.
With events ranging from 5km fun runs to the iconic 42km Marathon, this event attracts over 21,000 participants. The flat course, stunning views of Table Mountain, and incredible crowd support make it ideal for chasing a personal best or ticking off your first marathon. If you’re looking for a world-class race in Africa, this is it.
Ultra-Trail Cape Town (UTCT)
"Scenic, Technical, and Tough"
One of the most challenging and prestigious trail events in South Africa, UTCT has earned its spot on the global stage. With distances ranging from 23km to 160km, runners can choose their adventure—but don’t underestimate the difficulty of these technical trails.
UTCT’s live-streamed coverage, showcasing the stunning Cape Peninsula, makes it an internationally celebrated event. Whether you’re a participant or a spectator, this race is an unforgettable experience. If you’re up for the challenge, UTCT will test your limits and leave you with memories to last a lifetime.
